Today we read chapters 52-56.
Psalm 52 shows David speaking of his enemy, asking why he speaks evil and deceit—trusting in his own riches instead of the Lord. David knows to trust in the steadfast love of God, and puts his faith in Him alone. God will bless the righteous who put their faith in Him!
Psalm 53 is so very close to Romans chapter 3. Romans 3 actually quotes from this Psalm, saying that none is righteous, no one seeks after God, and no one is good. It is only through God, by God that anyone is deemed righteous, through the death and sacrifice of Christ on our behalf. It is humbling to realize that we are born wicked, longing for things that follow our own sinful desires, yet God in His mercy adopts us as His own. We do not seek anything good, and He is the ultimate good. He is gracious enough to lavish His love upon His children.
Psalm 54 is another cry out to God for deliverance against the author’s enemies. I love how he says “The Lord is my helper, the upholder of my life.” It shows us that God is the One who holds everything together for us. David puts his trust in the Lord, understanding that through Him he will live.
In Psalm 55 we see David asking once again to be saved from his enemies, but in this song, he actually admits he wishes he had “wings like a dove” so that he could flee from his troubles. I find this interesting because I can relate to that; wanting to flee from the stressful situation I may currently be in. Even though David wants to run away, he puts his trust in God. “Cast your burden on the Lord, and He will sustain you; He will never permit the righteous to be moved.” (Ps. 55:22).
Psalm 56 once again reminds us to put our trust in the Lord. God is sovereign. He is in control over every situation we may be put in. There is nothing that we have to fear, because man cannot do anything that God does not ultimately allow. David says, “In God I trust, what can man do to me?” This is a comforting verse, as it is a reminder that man can do nothing to me without God letting it be so. God is the One whom I can trust fully, in each and every circumstance of life. He is my protector, my fortress, my refuge, and my strength.
